Yearend Series 2009: These Are A Few of My Favorite Things… (II)

and then I don’t feel so bad.

TV

When Pinoy Big Brother first piqued our voyeuristic natures back in 2005, my roommate and I decided that it was time to buy ourselves a television. Pay wasn’t that good; I just graduated from college then, and was just a few months into corporate slavery working as a management associate for an insurance company. Nevertheless, I couldn’t resist the lure of mindless entertainment. So off to SM we went, choosing the best television set that we could afford given our limited cash. We ended up buying a bulky 21” Sanyo TV. High def what? Flat screen what?

After 4 years, Pinoy Big Brother is now at its third regular season. Shortly after The Big Reveal, my roommate and I decided that it was time to buy ourselves a new TV. He was now working, and I was considerably better off than I was in 2005. Armed with my new credit card, we headed off to Rockwell where we bought the best television set that my credit limit could take. We ended up buying a sleek 32″ Toshiba LCD TV.

Of course, right after tweaking the necessary techie thingamajig, we plopped down on the bed and watched as Rica and Rob pretended they were lovers. Some things never change.

2009: Shows

[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_10-the-amazing-race.jpg]The Amazing Race, Season 14
Winners: Tammy and Victor Like/Dislike: Like Although my love for The Amazing Race remains, its novelty has worn off, and my fanaticism extends somehow due to nostalgia more than anything else. Still, Season 14 (not Season 15, the one with Meghan and Cheyne) produced victors (get it?) that I found myself rooting for.
[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_9-antm.jpg]America's Next Top Model, Cycle 12
Winner: Teyona Like/Dislike: Dislike While I hated the winner of Cycle 12 (Teyona), this cycle produced perhaps my second most favorite contestant of all time: the big-eyed (not wide, wide is an understatement) Allison. Charming and sweet and ferosh and fierce all at the same time, this girl captured my ANTM-loving heart.
[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_8-project-runway.jpg]Project Runway, Season 6
Winner: Irina Like/Dislike: Dislike Project Runway scored a bit higher than the previous two shows because it was a return to a former love for me. I used to wait A WEEK for this show to air in Studio 23. I was a bit disappointed with Irina's win and the frequent absences of Nina Garcia and Michael Kors, but what the hell. It's Project Runway.
[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_7-mmas.jpg]Make Me A Supermodel, Season 2
Winner: Branden Like/Dislike: Like Two major differences between ANTM and MMAS: first, MMAS also caters to male models. Second, this show actually includes weekly go-sees and catwalks aside from the usual photo shoots. It's shocking to see winners getting go-sees as their prize for winning the photo challenges. It almost feels like I'm watching a REAL modelling show, TYRA.
[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_6-gossip-girl.jpg]Gossip Girl, Season 3
Best Character: Nate Archibald, for being just awesomely hilarious with his "best buddy" scenes with Dan. Never thought Nate had a flair for comedy. Worst Character: Blair Waldorf, for being obsessed about queendom in NYU. It's college, Blair-- why are you growing backwards? Character That Made Me Uncomfortable the Most: Olivia Burke. Lizzie McGuire engaging in threesomes. What will Gordo say?
[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_5-american-idol.jpg]American Idol, Season 8
Winner: Kris Allen Like/Dislike: Like This season, for me, had the best top 5 ever, and perhaps the best top 2 ever. I wanted Adam Lambert to win, by golly I did, but Kris Allen was a fantastic contender for the top spot. I didn't mind it when he won; his voice, like I mentioned in my 2009: Music gallery, is quite soothing.
[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_4-glee.jpg]Glee, Season 1
Best Character: Sue Sylvester, for being deliciously wicked. She'll probably knock me out for describing her as such. Worst Character: Artie. I don't like him for some reason. He does not compute. Best Character, But In A Totally Fucked Up Way: Miss Ohio. Watch the Sectionals. You'll see what I mean.
[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_3-top-chef.jpg]Top Chef, Season 6
Winner: Michael Voltaggio Like/Dislike: Like Most amazing Top 4 ever. I had my hopes pinned on my darling Jennifer, but with three other very talented cheftestants in the mix with her (including a set of identical twins!), I accepted the fact that it was probably her show to lose. No matter. It made for great TV.
[img src=http://www.thesunbakedking.com/wp-content/flagallery/2009-shows/thumbs/thumbs_2-pinoy-big-brother.jpg]Pinoy Big Brother, Season 3
Winner: most probably Melissa Like/Dislike: Dislike Hahaha. I'm a fan of Melason, I really am, but Melissa's just too much for me take. She's loud and overbearing, and seems too comical to be truly sincere. Nevertheless, this season is perhaps Dyogi's strongest to date (including all the celebrity and teen editions). The two-houses idea was superb, and the new voting process is a mathematical delight.

The best thing in television today. Grab your non-pirated DVD copies. It is worth every penny that you'll spend, and watching it is worth every second of your life. (And oh, Fox cancelled the series. $%!%%#@GRRR)
